Zagreb hospital performs 100 kidney transplants in 2009
KBC Zagreb hospital has performed 100 kidney transplants in 2009.
According to hospital head Zeljko Rainer, the first kidney transplant at KBC Zagreb was performed in 1973, and a total of 1,046 have been done there.
The 100th kidney, transplanted on December 15, 2009, was donated through Eurotransplant, an international association of countries that share a common list of organ transplants.
The hospital said kidney transplants had increased in Croatia, mainly thanks to more domestic experts.
The 100 transplants are the largest number performed at one hospital in Croatia. Together with other transplant programmes, they place KBC Zagreb among the leading European centres in transplant medicine.
