Frequently Asked Questions

What is my current positition on the waiting list?

People who are registered on the waiting list for an organ do not have an individual place on this waiting list; they do not move up one place if someone 'above' them is transplanted.
Instead, when a donor is reported, our system will select the best-fitting recipient at that point in time. This selection is based on a point score that is dependent on the recipient and the reported donor. For all organs, this point score consists of several factors such as blood group and waiting time. Next to that, every organ may have its organ-specific factors.

Can I donate organs to Eurotransplant?

For living donors, it is only possible to donate an organ (for example, a kidney) if the recipient is related to the donor. If a person is deceased and does not have contraindications for organ donation, donation of organs via Eurotransplant is of course possible

I need to be on a waiting list. What do I have to do?

If you need an organ transplantation, your treating physician will refer you to a transplantation center. There, you will be evaluated and if you can receive a transplantation, this center will put you on the waiting list.
For patients who live outside the Eurotransplant area and do not have the nationality of one of the Eurotransplant countries, there are only limited possibilities to be registered on a Eurotransplant waiting list. The treating physician may be able to contact transplantation programs in the Eurotransplant region to ask whether they accept patients from outside Eurotransplant.

I would like to thank the relatives of my donor. How can I do that?

The identity of the donor and the recipient are to be kept anonymous. However, if you write a letter in which you do not give away clues that could lead to your identity, such as your name or birth date, we can send this letter to the person who has coordinated the donor procedure; this coordinator can then pass it on to the relatives of the donor. If you do give your name or other identifying points, we will make your letter anonymous before sending it on.
